Urban League of Palm Beach County’s FPL STEM students worked hard to finish out the recent school year strong.
Here’s a few of their successes:
– On May 6, the students had the opportunity to go to John D. McArthur State Park in partnership with the Reef Institute. They learned how to improve ocean health, care for their environment through using a mineral sunscreen versus a chemical sunscreen, and were exposed to different careers in Marine Biology.
– On May 25, the FPL STEM Program at ULPBC hosted our first ever STEM Expo. Our STEM families were invited to come to ULPBC to participate in a walkthrough display of field trips, projects and experiments their students have worked on throughout the school year. Parents and students shared what the STEM program means to them.
– On May 25, 7th grader Charmalie Louis and 8th grader Jameelah Clarke from Roosevelt Middle School read inspirational speeches about how STEM has impacted their lives and all that they have learned in their two years of STEM education. We have witnessed these two STEM participants grow. Charmalie and Jameelah were both shy at first and now their leadership and public speaking skills have developed. The fact that these two students were able to take the lead and tell us they wanted to read speeches at the showcase revealed their maturity. They demonstrated leadership and stepped out of their comfort zones to read their speeches in front of all of the students and parents present. Charmalie is thankful for all she learned from the STEM program and because she had the opportunity to research various careers. She is considering becoming a doctor and specializing in OBGYN.
