Credit Recovery/ Drop Out Prevention Program

  • “I am so appreciative of the Urban League’s commitment to helping me finish school and graduate. I never thought it would have been possible to complete a class I previously failed on the computer in a matter of weeks. The teachers and program staff helped me so much and told me I could do it.”
  • “I had failed three classes and there was no way I could have made them up at school. I don’t have a computer at home or the internet. Thank you for providing an after school program where I could come everyday and get back on track.”
  • “This program changed my life. I now know that I can do anything I put my mind to as long as I am disciplined. I am so proud that I will be able to graduate in May.”

Comprehensive Housing Counseling

  •  “I am thankful that the Urban League was there for me when I needed help the most. I had never asked anyone for assistance before until I lost my job. The Urban League helped me save my home and never judged me.”
  •  “I was so proud to get the keys to my new house. My housing counselor held my hand through the whole process and helped me from making expensive mistakes. It is because of him that I am now a homeowner!”

“I am writing this letter to commend the Mr. Weatherspoon in your Housing Department for their excellent personal and business skills.  You have no idea what a positive impact their assistance had on me.  When I came to see him I really thought there was no help or hope at that time for me.  It seemed I had written and called every organization in my area and no one would help me or give me any direction on what to do. I felt like I was banging my head against the wall. They all said after I become homeless to come back and maybe they could help me.  I wondered why it isn’t easier to help someone before they become homeless instead of after.   I thought the light at the end of my tunnel was a train and it was coming fast.

He was the only one who treated me with respect and dignity and in a very professional manner.  His help that month gave me not only a roof over my head but the strength and hope to keep going.  I was mentally and physically exhausted trying to help myself.  This past year and a half has been the longest and hardest year of my life.  As bad as it’s been it has also been very humbling and a life lesson in humanity.  I understand how easy it is for someone to become homeless and how quick it can happen.  It’s so hard to fight and help yourself when you’re hanging onto the world by a thread and there is no one to advocate for you. The sadist feeling is feeling like you are the child and your child is the parent. I never want to feel like that again. Its amazing how one person can help you regain your power and strength to go on and I thank him for that. He was literally my last hope that day. We need more people like people like Mr. Weatherspoon in the world.”
